Off-camera question: “How do you approach leadership in your agency?”
You may disagree, but I feel like being a boss is a lot like being a parent. I have three kids, and I only have them for a certain moment in time. My role in their lives is to nurture their growth, create a sense of belonging, and guide their development from point A to B.
When you apply these principles to leadership, you begin to view your job as nurturing and stewarding the talents of your team members, rather than hoarding talent orrrrr making the relationship about what they can give to you.
The metaphor breaks down, because I’m not tucking in my employees at night! However, just like with my kids, there comes a time when I will have to let go. It’s tough… thinking about my real life empty nest makes me want to cry every day! But my kids are free to go. Employees are free to move on with our support and blessing.
Listen, rehiring is expensive. None of us want employees to leave. But people leave jobs for all sorts of reasons. If we plan for it, expect it, we’ll be ready to celebrate the time we had together and the fact that we were able to share our job journey, even if it was only a few years.
